PIAZZA ROCK TRAIL: Pick up the Appalachian Trail
where it crosses Route 4, 9 miles south of the center of Rangeley.
Hike towards Saddle- back Mountain. The Piazza Rock is an enormous,
flat, overhanging boulder appearing to be balanced in mid-air and
supporting the growth
of large trees. The "Rock" is a fairly easy 1.4 mile walk
through rolling woodland and features a series of boulder caves
and secret picnic
spots with a lean-to shelter. This is a nice hike for the family!
SADDLEBACK MOUNTAIN TRAIL: The most popular
and scenic summer hiking route to the summit is from the Saddleback
Mountain Ski Area.
Begin at the base lodge and follow the green chairlift ("The
Surrey") to
the top of the "Gold Rush" Trail. Directly above the top
of this lift is the "Haymaker" Trail. This particular
trail is wide and offers great views all the way to the top of the
"Stagecoach" chairlift. From this point, follow the "Cliffhanger"
Trail, which rises from behind the top of the "Stagecoach"
lift, and continues to the top of the "Wells Fargo" Lift.
Directly behind the upper building, a short, narrow trail leads
to the mountains' barren summit and offers excellent panoramic views
of the Rangeley Lakes Region. Please be sure to note where this
trail connects in the above-tree-line area, for your return trip
