Kayaking in Maine's Rangeley Lakes Region
CUPSUPTIC RIVER: This trip takes from 1 to 1.5 hours with easy access. Enter the river at the public boat landing, located approximately 1 mile past the Maine Forest Service Station on the east side of Route 16 West. "Hinkley's Café" a camping and a picnic area, is located about 1 mile up river on the west side. Three quarters of a mile further up the river on the left is "Mooch's Cabin". Passage becomes impossible at this point due to rocks and a small falls. Paddlers must turn around here and return.

DEAD RIVER - NORTH BRANCH: This 3.4 mile paddle takes about 2 hours and requires a shuttle and portage. On Route 27 North, pass Eustis and travel about 1.5 miles to King and Bartlett Road on the right. Turn right at the King & Bartlett sign and cross the bridge. Launch on the left immediately after the bridge. Park on the right side of the road. For shuttles leave your vehicle at the Cathedral Pines Campground located between Stratton and Eustis on Route 27 North. A portage of about 100 yards is located near a dam marked by a cable with barrels strung across the river. Pull out on the right where the cable is anchored. A path is on the left. 100 yards below the dam is a spot for re-entry. Continue on to Cathedral Pines.
